In this class, students will dive into programming by creating custom extensions (mods) for Minecraft using the Java Edition. Through hands-on coding in Java, they’ll design new items, blocks, or mechanics, enhancing their Minecraft experience while learning programming concepts like variables, loops, and functions. Students must bring a device capable of running Minecraft Java Edition and a Java development environment (e.g., IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse). Basic computer literacy and the ability to sit for 45 minutes are required; prior Java experience is helpful but not mandatory. Note: Your old Linux laptop may struggle with modern Java IDEs or Minecraft modding tools. A minimum of 8GB RAM and a recent Linux distribution (e.g., Ubuntu 20.04 or later) is recommended. Test your setup with Forge Mod Development Kit before the class starts or consider borrowing a school computer if available.
Students must own or have access to Minecraft Java Edition.
