This year-long high school level course will cover great books from American literature representing various time periods. Works covered will include plays, poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. Students must read works outside of class and be prepared for in-class discussions. There will be writing assignments as well as a focus on enriching vocabulary and language comprehension. Works that may be covered in this class over two semesters include Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Black Boy by Ralph Ellison, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Our Town by Thornton Wilder, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, short stories of Edgar Allen Poe, and Into the Wild by John Krakauer.
The book fee for this class covers copies of the works that will be read.
Semester 1 works will be from early American history through the 19th century. Semester 2 works will be from the 20th and 21st century.
This class meets first and second period. Students must stay for both periods.
